Q1. You are the first foreign professor Comtimes have ever interviewed. Many of students and alumni are eager to know about you. So, would you introduce yourself?

A. I'm Yap Chee Een from Malaysia. My major is Information Systems. It is very similar to Software engineering. I have stayed in Korea for 1 year since February 2011 with my wife and son. This is my second year in Korea. And this year, I've started to learn Korean. It's difficult for me, so I just can speak basic expressions like greetings and "What's your name?".

Q2. Would you tell us how did you come to choose your profession and manage to be who you are now?

A. After my secondary school, I went to the university to study IT. After that, I went to Scotland for my master's degree, and then I went back to Malaysia, and taught college and university students many years, about 9 to 10 years until now. The reason why I came to Korea is, I wanted to experience something different. Keeping teaching in same place was a kind of boring to me.

Q3. Since life in a foreign country is not a easy thing, we suppose you had a clear goal when you decided to come to Korea.

A. As I mentioned before, I just like being exposed to a new culture. So, I'm not sure how long I'll be staying here, but maybe I will stay in Korea for several years. After that, I think I will visit other countries. I will start my life again in another country. During my life days, I will teach. But I'm not certain about where I'm going to teach.

Q4. It has been over one year since you came to teach in our school. What was the most difficult thing you have ever experienced?

A. Language. I cannot understand what others say when I go to a subway or buy something. And sometimes it is also the problem to students. I think some of the students cannot understand my lecture because it's English. And I got a culture shock for my first few weeks in Korea. The reaction from students was different between Korean and Malaysian. Some of Malaysian students are more aggressive and they ask more questions than Korean students. So Korean students seemed quiet contrary to Malaysian students.

Q5. For last one, both as a professor and a person who studied computer earlier, please give a comment to computer majoring students in our school.

A. Computer science is a never-ending study. So it always changes. Do more practical, and I think learning is a two-way communication process. It means learning is a combination of teaching and asking. I always hope students ask questions. Also, students should respond if they have any doubts. If lecture is too fast, too slow, or unclear, you need to raise your hand. I cannot help you if you are quiet. I believe I am here to help students. So, when I do my part, I hope students also do their parts. Two-way is more effective.
